Europe Calling

THE N.Z. RADIO TIMES

August 10, 1935

The Europeans are now beginning to appear once more in the early mornings, and at the end of this month should be coming in with excellent volume. Dxers wishing to build up their logs of these stations will find the following article and station list of invaluable assistance.

AUGUST heralds the commencement of spring which is one of the most important seasons for dxing. We have found in past years that our reception of stations in the Northern Hemisphere is much better in the spring than in any other season, This can be accounted for ‘by the fact that while we are leaving our winter, in the Northern Hemisphere they are entering their winter, and it is well known that radio signals “get out” better in damp weather. Hence we have found that reception, especially from the most distant stations that we hear, Europeans, is better in the spring than in any other season.

It was in 1931 that some of the early rising dxers first heard stations on the air which they could not place. A query in the “Notes” by the dxers hearing these stations induced others to set their alarm clocks and rise before sunrise in order to hear these stations. Now, during spring and autumn, it is part of the hobby to rise regularly at dawn and DX for European stations. Those who have made it a habit have as many as fifty of these stations verified.

These stations are sympathetic to dxers and most of them verify very promptly; particularly is this so with the stations in France, Germany, Italy, and Austria. On glancing through the list of stations broadcasting in Europe we find that there are thirteen on the air broadcasting with powers of 100,000 watts or more. Every one of them has been verified by some dxer in New Zealand. Another run through the list shows 64 more stations using 10,000 watts or more, 33 of which have been verified by our dxers. so that with these stations alone, dxers can have a log of 46 verified Europeans. Also, apart from these, there are as many as 20 other stations with lower powers that have been verified by New Zealand listeners. These figures will give dxers some idea of the field that European fixing opens for them.

In past years we have found that spring has been the best season for European reception. From August till October these stations are received here with good volume, and it is worth while to rise early and spend a couple of hours each morning logging them. One should procure an up-to-date list of the stations on the air in Europe, and a reliable time chart for converting our time to theirs, and set the clock for one hour before dawn. If one rises regularly the reward will be at least fifty verified European stations. When converting time and writing to the stations, always state that the time given is their standard time, as many of the countries have “daylight saving.”

To commence with, stations using 100.000 watts or more, should be marked down and tried for. By working systematically one will find that more stations will be logged than would otherwise be the case. It is very difficult, when one arises and finds about forty stations coming in with good volume, to know where to start, but it is a good principle to log the higher powered stations first. By the time one has these, it will be found that the stations have increased in power, and as the season proceeds the lower-powered stations will be coming in with quite good volume. By the end of August the stations should be at their best, and in past years the more powerful ones have been loggable on the loudspeaker, with very little noise.

It has been found that stations in Russia do not readily verify reports. Moscow on 832 k.c. and Odessa on 968 k.c. are two stations in that country that have verified reports. In the case of the former, dxers should address their reports to Inna Marr, at that station, and include an International Reply Paid Coupon.

The following list of European stations includes the latest increases in powers, changes of frequencies and new stations. Stations marked with a star have been verified by New Zealand dxers.
